Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson was born on December 22 , 1912 and was the wife of President Lyndon Johnson , the first lady. She was known as the most active first lady of the era and began the tradition of the first lady a non paritisan issue to champion ; hers was beautification.
Lady Bird was an ardent lifelong advocate for beautifying the nation’s cities and highways. The Highway Beautification Act was informally known as Lady Birds bill ; the act was specifically aimed at making the most use of highway billboards. She stressed envrionmentalism to the country.
She also established the office of the first lady and even employed her own secretary.
